There have been various unusual monster truck incidents and accidents throughout the years of monster truck history. While there have been few injuries, there have also been a handful of unusual accidents as well. It should be noted here that none of the incidents listed below were fatal. A Double Crash is also considered unusual, but those are not listed here and are listed on their own individual page.

106.7 The Fox (Pastrana 199)[]

In Detroit 2008, 106.7 The Fox (Which was run on the Pastrana 199 chassis for the event) hit the middle racing obstacle with high speed, resulting in the truck leaping high into the air and leaning over onto its right side. It landed hard on both right tires and broke the sway bar in the process. The impact resulted in driver Courtney Jolly sustaining an injury requiring her to be assisted out of the truck. Jolly would later return to driving, but retired by the end of the 2008 season as a long-term result of the injury.

Aftershock and Walking Tall[]

During a Monster Truckz event in Greenville, South Carolina, Aftershock collided with Walking Tall. At the finish of a side-by-side race, both trucks started drifting towards a jack-rabbit stack in the center of the track. As Walking Tall slowly went along the left side and partway onto the long ramp side, Aftershock leaped over the jammer portion. As the truck came down, Aftershock's left front tire landed on the hood and right-front tire of Walking Tall. Walking Tall was not badly damaged and returned for the next round (minus the hood), and Aftershock would be able to come back for freestyle.

Orlando[]

In Orlando, Florida on January 27, 2007, Damon Bradshaw had turned in a great freestyle performance. Time had already ran out, when Damon went to make a right turn, when his truck tipped and flipped over. When the truck came to a rest upside down, the truck exploded into flames. Damon got out in seconds and was unhurt as he finished in 2nd in freestyle with a 26.

Jacksonville[]

Nearly a month later on February 24, this time in Jacksonville, Florida, Damon turned in another great run. He did a couple donuts with 2 seconds left before time ran out, when the truck began smoking again. The truck did a couple more jumps after time expired and Damon attempted to make a right hand turn, but the transmission gave out creating a large plume of smoke and then the truck exploded into another big fire. Fortunately, Damon got out in almost a split second thanks to the quick release belts. Damon would actually tie for the freestyle win alongside Adam Anderson in Grave Digger with a score of 29.

2010[]

At the first ever Monster Jam at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Damon Bradshaw broke the front axle off the truck in freestyle. The clip can be found in a MonsterJamLive video called Monster Jam losing two wheels.

Alien Invasion[]

At the fourth Monster Jam show at Sacramento, California at the Golden 1 Center, the truck would jump over the arena obstacle, clip the obstacle, and would do a somersault before the truck would land hit the safety barrier, damaging a portion of the arena. Lyght would later be suspended for the rest of Sacramento events (which would eventually turn into the rest of the year) and Dustin Brown would fill-in and drive the truck for the few Sacramento events.

An Escalade[]

At a Monster Jam speedway show at Virginia Motor Speedway in 2008, Charlie Pauken in An Escalade almost completed the first monster truck frontflip after losing control in a wheelie, much like Lee O'Donnell would do in VP Racing Fuels' The Mad Scientist in 2017. The truck did a wheelie off an obstacle, and rode it down the speedway before clipping another set of crush cars, and hurling forward. It landed on the tailgate just before its tires, and proceeded to do a second forward roll, before coming to a stop on its wheels. The crash would win Charlie Pauken the Crash Madness of the Year award for the season. During the speech for the award, Charlie said he ended up breaking his hand in the crash, leaving him out for three months.

During the first Pontiac show at Monster Jam in 2004, Avenger crashed on top of Rap Attack. During the run, Avenger attempted to climb a large moto-cross jump, but ended up sliding off the side of the hill, resulting in the truck landing on top of the parked Rap Attack. Rap Attack was not mechanically damaged. The crash can be seen from a "Around The USHRA" segment.

2000[]

During a Monster Jam event in 2000 at New Orleans, Avenger would meet nWo in the final round race. During the race, while over the crush cars, Avenger would get a bad rebound on the landing and would cause the truck to violently roll and flip, before landing hard on the rear and falling back on all tires. According to Jim, the roll was so violent, that the glasses he was wearing had fallen off.

2006[]

In an event at Indianapolis in 2006, Avenger was doing a freestyle run when Koehler turned towards the racing lane. Koehler sent the truck and got some massive air and did a little sky wheelie over the car stack. The truck then landed on the rear, where it would break both of the rear wheels off at the same time and then rolled over.

2015[]

At World Finals 16, during Avenger's freestyle run, the truck would gain lots of momentum after doing a lot of cyclone donuts, and after that, he would drive a long way to a small, but very steep ramp, to which he would send the truck insanely high, while the truck had started leaning backwards mid-air, and he would land violently hard on the rear at landing with no rebound at all. Koehler was thankfully not injured at all in the wreck.

2019[]

At the inaugural Monster Jam All Star Challenge at Sam Boyd Stadium in October of 2019, Jim Koehler driving Avenger Fire for Team Fire launched the truck in freestyle on the first hit coming down Thunder Alley and got huge air in a bad angle and violently crash landed on the truck's nose, breaking off both front wheels in the process. The truck then did a slow forward roll & landed upright. Jim was not injured in the wreck.

2022[]

On February 19th, 2022, during the skills challenge of the third Anaheim show of Stadium Tour Yellow, Avenger (running its World Finals X Scuba design) attempted a stoppie, which rolled the truck over, and back up on its wheels, with the front tires perched on the dumpster.

Backwards Bob[]

2009[]

During the first show in Arnhem 2009, George Balhan was at the start of his freestyle in Backwards Bob when on one of the jumps, the rear steer handle that Balhan was holding onto to use the rear steer of the truck came loose and the landing jerked the steering wheel a bit violently and ended up jamming Balhan's thumb in between the steering wheel and the rear steering device where it broke either his thumb or his wrist. Balhan went to the hospital to get checked out and ended up missing the last two shows of the event. He was replaced by Grave Digger crew chief Dustin Brown, who usually was Dennis Anderson's crew chief, but was working with Charlie Pauken for the European Tour. This was Brown's first driving opportunity. Balhan would join the Speed channel broadcast of both racing and freestyle for shows 2 and 3.

2015[]

In 2015, Backwards Bob was destroyed in an accidental trailer fire. Nobody was injured in the incident, and the truck's teammate, Grave Digger 28, was salvaged from the wreck. The truck later returned with a spare Body on a backup PEI Chassis. The incident bared similar resemblance to that of FireCore Crusher, as listed below. The backup Chassis used was actually the original Northern Nightmare, which ironically suffered a major engine fire during its last show.

Bad News Travels Fast[]

2008[]

During an event in Des Moines, Iowa in 2008 the entire front axle of Bad News Travels Fast separated from the rest of the truck. As driver Bruce Haney started his Freestyle performance, he got the truck to perform a small power wheelie, the left front tire then clipped a Car pad, which in turn broke the entire front housing off the truck. The crash was nominated for the 2008 Crash Madness Award in Monster Jam.

2019[]

During the freestyle competition for the Saturday Night event at the 2019 Lima, Ohio 4-Wheel Jamboree, Bad News Travels Fast ripped down a wire. While performing a wheelie over the racing lane, a low hanging wire was caught by the bumper, as the truck came down, the wire was pulled off the poles. Brandon Derrow was allowed to continue after the wire was removed from the track.

Barbarian[]

2018 (1)[]

During an unknown monster truck show in 2018, Barbarian nearly crashed into the stands. As the truck hit a car pad, it landed on its side. As driver Devin Jones tried to save it, the truck crashed with the right rear tire in the stands only less than one foot away from spectators. No one was injured.

2018 (2)[]

In June 2018, at a speedway show, Barbarian suffered a major fire during its freestyle. Devin Jones was not wearing fire proof gloves at the time, resulting in massive 2nd degree burns across them. Devin would recover, and return to driving several months later.

Big Boss[]

Big Boss was involved in an accident where the throttle stuck and crashed through the dining pavilion at a fairground event. It struck a few spectators, but luckily nobody was critically injured. Photos can be found on Dennis Taft's site.

Bigfoot[]

2000[]

During a Monster Truck event at Aruba in October of 2000, there were two Bigfoot trucks planned to run at the event with one being Bigfoot 15 driven by Eric Tack as the Tonka sponsored Bigfoot and the other with Bigfoot 14 driven by Dan Runte with a special stunt entrance planned for Runte. The truck was to jump over a wall outside the stadium and enter the stadium that way. The truck went as soon as the pyrotechnics went off to make the spectacular entrance. Instead, the ramp wasn't built high enough and truck went over the ramp, clipped the top of the wall destroying the wall, and the truck went into a nosedive but miraculously, Runte saved the truck from going over. However, the truck also got damaged as a result of the failed stunt and the right front and left rear tires both came off the rim. The truck was able to get fixed in time to compete in the event. The moment of the crash is posted on Bigfoot's YouTube channel.

2010[]

In January 2010, at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, Bigfoot, driven by Rodney Tweedy, was reaching its final moments of freestyle, when the truck took a sharp, right-hand turn and tilted on its two left wheels. The truck did Sidewalls before rolling directly where spectators were sitting (since this was not a Monster Jam event, none of the seats were closed off, as they are in Monster Jam). Just moments before what would have been a collision with the wall itself, the truck then rolled onto its roof (it is possible Tweedy did this on purpose, to prevent the truck from violently colliding with the wall). One of the tires collided with a handrail just inches from where spectators were sitting. No spectators were injured nor was Tweedy. It was reportedly his first time ever rolling over in a monster truck.

Bigfoot #21[]

2016[]

During a 2016 event in Miami, Oklahoma, Larry Swim and Bigfoot 21 suffered a violent Racing crash. In the final round race of the second event, Swim was against Devin Jones and Barbarian. They both floored it down the track and Swim just edged out Jones. After the finish, Bigfoot ran head on into a delivery truck stack with dirt on the opposite side. The impact completely destroyed the car and van the truck collided with and the truck ended up springing off the obstacle, twisting on the left front tire and slamming down on its side. Swim was unharmed, but the truck was severely damaged, causing the team to miss freestyle and lose their chance at the weekend points title.

2017[]

During a 2017 event in Beaumont, Texas, Swim was doing his freestyle run when he decided to turn towards the the backside of the big air ramp. The truck hit the ramp and did a sky wheelie where the truck would start to lean backwards mid air and the truck stuck the landing on the rear of the chassis on top of the big hill ramp. Swim was able to get out unharmed while his truck was able to get down with the help of a loader. The moment is posted on Bigfoot's YouTube channel.

Bear Foot and Carolina Crusher[]

During a race in West Lebanon, Bear Foot clipped Carolina Crusher after it lost control. Bear Foot struck Carolina crusher hard, which caused it to over balance at high speed and roll violently after the finish line. It is unknown if Gary Porter (driver of Carolina Crusher) was hurt in the crash.

Blacksmith[]

2001[]

During the Monster Jam World Finals 2, Blacksmith was racing against Blue Thunder in the semi-final round. Blacksmith won, but the truck overturned and rolled a few times, before rolling over and landing in-between two Dumpsters. Driver Pablo Huffaker was uninjured in the crash. Despite attempts to retrieve the truck from where it came to rest, they were unable to, and the truck was left there for the rest of the night. Huffaker would borrow Ragin Steel for freestyle.

2002[]

During the 2002 San Diego Monster Jam event, Blacksmith landed upside down in an obstacle. During freestyle, driver Norm Miller lined up for the yet to be hit delivery van stack. After Miller hit the first car the truck went straight up and rotated backwards while traveling forward. The truck landed upside down, coming to rest inside the delivery truck, a van and a car.

Blue Thunder and King Krunch[]

During the first pair of qualifying in Houston 2008 (Show 1), Tony Farrell in Blue Thunder was qualifying against David Smith in King Krunch when both trucks went over the stack of cars for the first time. Both trucks went a bit sideways going over the cars and on the landing, King Krunch's right front tire hit the left rear tire of Blue Thunder which sent Farrell on the right sides where it appeared Farrell saved it, but the truck took a bad rebound and flipped over on the left side. Fortunately, no damage was done to King Krunch and only cosmetic damage was done on Blue Thunder but not too much damage as both trucks would be able to get back to compete for racing and freestyle.

Blue Thunder[]

2002[]

During the first show in 2002 at Pontiac, Tony Farrell in Blue Thunder was freestyling when Farrell decided to go after the big pyramid stack in the middle. The back tires caught the van which sent the truck into a wheelie. The truck then began to dance in the rear when it went back and forth and started to cart wheel before flipping violently and landing onto a dumpster at the end of the track. Farrell got out several minutes later unharmed. The crash to this day is regarded as one of the most memorable moments in Monster Jam.

2008[]

At an event in Orlando 2008, Linsey Weenk in Blue Thunder hit a unique ramp, which was a big hill ramp with a camper on top of it. He would drive into it, which would cause the camper to completely smash to pieces and get destroyed, while the truck would lean forward from impact and land hard and forcefully on the rear causing the truck to go over. Linsey was not hurt in the crash. The moment was also very popular and replayed a lot during the 2008 season and for many seasons onward. At the World Finals 11 encore, Frank Krmel broke off the right rear tire & continued, before hitting the red van stack at the other end of the track & breaking the left front wheel. This clip can be found in MonsterJamLive's losing two wheels video or videos from the encore itself.

The Black Pearl[]

During round 2 of the Monster Jam World Finals 19 racing bracket, The Black Pearl drifted through Thunder Alley and went up onto the jersey barriers (cement barriers) lining the track. This caused the front tie rod to break and as driver Cole Venard attempted to finish the race he lost control, flipped violently and slammed into the wall. Cole was unharmed, but the impact smashed a railing at the edge of the wall and severely damaged the truck. A Fireworks cannon was also destroyed after being struck by a tire.

Boogey Van[]

Boogey Van was involved in a infamous accident in Pontiac 1995, where the truck had crashed full on into the stadium wall, resulting in the impact knocking off both the front right, and rear right tires. It destroyed 14 feet of the stadium wall. Driver Pam Vahle was in the hospital for four days as a result of the impact.

Bounty Hunter[]

2002[]

During the second Minneapolis event of 2002, Bounty Hunter lost both rear wheels at the same time. On his third hit, driver Jimmy Creten lined up for the big air jump and came up short, causing the rear housing to clip the landing pad. The left rear snapped off almost immediately. It also took the entire wheel assembly and housing with it. The right rear also snapped off moments later and it ended up folding up underneath the right side of the rear housing. The truck came to rest with the rear end perfectly balanced on the right rear tire.

2018[]

At the Montreal Monster Spectacular in Canada 2018, Jimmy Creten and Bounty Hunter made it to the semi-finals of racing against AJ Ganci in Axe. As the trucks began the race, Bounty Hunter's engine exploded, bursting into a large fire. Bounty Hunter, however, did not stop, and attempted to complete the lap, the truck streaming fire from behind. Eventually, the truck was shut down, and the fire extinguished. Axe was shut down as well, probably to allow AJ to check if Jimmy was okay. A few weeks later, this time in Monster Jam in Santa Clara, Bounty Hunter, still under Creten, almost suffered the same incident during a first round race against Ryan Anderson in Son-uva Digger. This time the motor did not burst into flames, it only produced smoke throughout the whole race. The truck once again, still finished the race even resulting in a close Photo Finish loss.

2019[]

At the 2019 Clark County Fair in Washington, Bounty Hunter was doing an exhibition freestyle, when Jimmy Creten lost control of the truck during a wheelie. The truck would drift off course, and land directly on top of a high voltage power box, which was crushed and immediately sent out a large shower of shocks and electricity.

BroDozer[]

During the end of its debut freestyle, BroDozer went into an uncontrolled bicycle and struck Lucas Oil Crusader, forcefully pushing it into a nearby staircase. Some of the railings of the staircase were severely bent and officials can be seen climbing over it to reach the track. There were no injuries or major damages to either of the trucks or crew members. This moment was cut from FELD footage of the event and was only caught on the live stream of the debut on Facebook and audience members.

Brutus[]

2002[]

In Pontiac 2002, Brutus had driven out of the pits for freestyle, when a tire rolled off two seconds after starting freestyle. The cause to this incident was because bolts hadn't been properly secured back on after a tire change, after the wheel nearly broke off during racing. As a result, the tire merely rolled away.

2011[]

At Monster Jam World Finals 12, Chris Bergeron would drive Brutus. His run would unfortunately end early, as Bergeron would suffer a rather violent crash at the end of his run when he hit the backflip ramp, where he only made about half a rotation before the truck landed hard and flat on its roof. Bergeron later revealed that he was never actually going for the backflip, but was actually attempting to go through the container, like the old-school ones used during the 2000's. He hit the brakes in mid air. Thankfully, Chris was not injured in the wreck, though he did say he was shaken up a bit from the crash, claiming his head hurt a bit. The chassis was also mildly damaged from the wreck.

2002[]

In the 4th Houston show of 2002, Guy Wood was qualifying against Dan Evans in The Destroyer. Wood went over the cars when the truck began to go into a nose dive. The truck went nose first into the dirt, snapped off the left front spindle, broke the front tire rod, broke the left front shock, and tore apart almost the entire body off the truck as the truck crashed and flipped over onto its roof. The truck also had some chassis damage in the process but Wood would get out uninjured and waved to the fans as the truck would not compete for the rest of the event.

Captain's Curse[]

Alex Blackwell in Captain's Curse would compete in the final race at Monster Jam World Finals X, going up against Tom Meents in Maximum Destruction. As the truck turned the corner in the left lane, the lost its brakes, causing the truck to flip violently up over the wall and into the stands. The section of seats the truck landed in were closed off, so nobody was injured. The crash was censored from the SPEED broadcast of the episode and the World Finals X Home DVD release, due to controversy regarding two unrelated fatal monster truck incidents earlier that year. The unseen footage of the crash was only shown in European broadcasts. Protective dumpsters were placed on the edges of the stadium for all subsequent World Finals as a result of the incident, which unintentionally prevented the double and triple bus stack jumps performed in previous years. The truck was unable to compete for freestyle as a result. It is ironically similar to the accident its predecessor Blacksmith had in 2001, although that was on the other side of the track. Alex, along with all the spectators were all thankfully uninjured, although there was damage to the stadium where it landed.

2015/2016 "Lobster Rolls"[]

Crushstation was involved in two separate incidents that have been comically dubbed as the "Lobster Roll" incidents. One was in 2015 at Detroit, MI, where the truck was doing a wheelie, and clipped a jammer stack. The truck proceeded to flip end over end twice down the track, before it launched into the air, landing on top of the dumpster at the wall of the track, then sliding over, and stopping on top of the Storm Damage monster truck.

Demon, Kimosabe, Showtime and Weapon 1 Ride Truck[]

A devastating fire ravaged the 22,000 square foot shop of Trick Trucks, Inc. in Spring City, Pennsylvania on July 16, 1998. Rich Blackburne's Demon, Jack Brady's Kimosabe, Greg Peck's Showtime, and Bill Johnson's Weapon 1 ride truck were completely destroyed, along with shop machinery, parts and supplies. Fortunately no one was in the shop at the time and there were no injuries as a result of this blaze. The fire was caused from a faulty battery from a Power Wheels Bigfoot toy. The Toy Company had announced soon thereafter that the batteries in the trucks had been found to overcharge and combust, ultimately causing a fire. The toy trucks have since been recalled nationwide due to their apparent flaw, and Mattel is still selling the toys without further incident. Explosions were frequent as the shop contained racing fuel, welding, gas and propane tanks. Unexpected explosions came from the sixteen 66" Monster Truck tires that were stored in the shop after the air inside them became hot and expanded until they violently burst.

Desert Storm[]

Desert Storm was a monster ride truck that was famous for its Rollover on a beachside. The truck slipped on the sand on a dune, and overbalanced, and rolled on its side before sliding down the small slope in the sand. No injuries were reported.

Earth Shaker (Hurricane Force)[]

On February 10th 2020, in the Monster Jam Stadium Championship Series Yellow in Houston, Texas, a piece of fiberglass was thrown off of Hurricane Force (running as Earth Shaker at the time) seconds after his race with his teammate Storm Damage (running as Zombie at the time) ended. The object landed in the stands, hitting a young girl and her family. Thankfully no one was seriously injured.

El Perro Loco[]

During 2013, at an event in Mexico, El Perro Loco did a slap wheelie and came dangerously close to running into spectators on the track, this being due to the facts that there was spectators at track level with only a small fence for protection. The event happened less than a couple months prior from the fatal incident with Big Show in the same country.

El Toro Loco[]

Armando Castro[]

During the Friday night event in Newark, New Jersey in 2023 Armando Castro's El Toro Loco had a tire accidently flattened by the track crew. After suffering a rollover during the two-wheel skills challenge as the truck was being up-righted, the trucks left front tire landed directly on top of the track teams recovery equipment. The point on the end of the recovery equipment ended up punching a hole in tire causing it to rapidly deflate. Castro retuned for the remainder of the event with a spare tire.

Elvis Lainez[]

During intros of a Triple Threat West event in Oklahoma City, OK in 2020, Elvis Lainez in El Toro Loco turned the truck too tight around one of the turns and ended up rolling the truck over. Surprisingly, the truck rolled back onto all four wheels, but all of the other trucks in intros where shut off.

Kayla Blood[]

During the final round of a Triple Threat Central racing competition in Newark, NJ, El Toro Loco, driven by Kayla Blood, went of the dirt and slid across the thin area of cement next to the track. As she tried to stop the right rear tire went under a portion of the wall and became stuck. The track team had to pull the truck out with a front loader, competition was stopped as event and arena officials surveyed the damage. El Toro Loco was repaired for two-wheel skills and the only known building damage was a bent railing.

Chuck Werner[]

During qualifying in Atlanta in 2014, Avenger collided with El Toro Loco. Going into the final turn, Avenger high sided and as driver Jim Koehler attempted to save the truck, he went in between the turning cars and back towards the one racing jump, where Chuck Werner was finishing his qualifying pass in El Toro Loco. Avenger then drove straight into the left side of El Toro and proceeded to bounce off and flip. Even though both trucks were damaged, as El Toro Loco had minor damage and Avenger had severe damage, both drivers walked away uninjured, El Toro Loco would return for round one of racing and Avenger would return for freestyle.

Lupe Soza[]

At Monster Jam World Finals 5, Bounty Hunter (driven by Jimmy Creten) became stuck on the large trailer obstacle, where Lupe Soza in El Toro Loco would jump it in freestyle. El Toro Loco, with great speed, jumped the trailer, narrowly avoiding contact with the Bounty Hunter truck, and leaving it in the exact same place after jumping it. El Toro Loco would then crash, causing the back axle and tires to come loose. El Toro Loco would end up in a three-way-tie (the first and so far only time this has happened at the World Finals) along with Madusa, who later knocked down the Bounty Hunter truck from its place.

Rob Knell[]

In 2004, at the West Coast Monster Truck Nationals in Red Bluff California, Rob Knell was critically injured during a qualifying pass, driving El Toro Loco. During the pass, the converter in his truck caused the transmission to explode, sending debris into fuel lines, and causing a massive explosion. The truck was completely engulfed in a raging fire as Rob Knell tried to get out for minutes. The fire was eventually quenched, and Rob was rescued from the truck, and airlifted to the Hospital. He was in critical condition, suffering 2nd degree burns over his body, a broken elbow, and several broken fingers. He would eventually make a return from 2006 and 2007, but then fully retired from Monster Jam.

Ryan Huffaker[]

At the third show in Houston of 2013, the truck lost both rear wheels in freestyle.

Eradicator[]

Early in 2005, Eradicator was involved in a trailer fire. Andy Slifko and the crew managed to pull the truck out of the trailer relatively intact even though the truck did not have a functioning transmission. The truck suffered a significant burn mark on the right side of the body. The team got hold of another trailer to continue touring. The truck ran a few shows with the burned body, as the spare was destroyed in the fire. The truck would receive a new black version of the scheme afterwards.

FireCore Crusher[]

In January 2013, Sin City Crusher debuted an alternate version of their truck called FireCore Crusher, with a new sponsorship. However, that same year, the truck would get involved in July 2013, which would burn and destroy the truck, which would place both FireCore and Sin City into hiatus.

Full Metal Jacket[]

During its debut show, the Full Metal Jacket monster tank rolled over. This was the only rollover of the tank in its life, and even after Jack Willman and then Trevor Stimson's ownerships, there was no repeat of the incident.

FTI Torque[]

During the 2018 Friday event in Wheeling, WV, Intros were stopped due to FTI Torque missing a fuel cap. The truck also missed round 1 of racing because of this.

Grave Digger[]

Grave Digger #2[]

At an unknown show, Grave Digger #2 nearly drove into the crowd during a race. The truck was stopped after it braked, and bumped into barrier protections, and thankfully no one was injured.

Grave Digger #3[]

In 1992, Grave Digger #3 was involved in a serious accident during a race against Taurus at a show in Providence Rhode Island. The truck was being driven that day by driver Lyle Hancock. The truck bounced over a set of crush cars and was thrown forward, then back onto its back two tires, and then forward again, being flung up the side wall, colliding with a camera and nearly hit spectators in the first few rows of seats. Amazingly enough, the camera that it collided with was not destroyed, nor was the camera operator injured. Hancock was also uninjured while two spectators received minor injuries from debris. More humorously, according to Dennis Anderson (owner of Grave Digger) commentating on footage of the crash, another spectator near the crash (who according to Anderson, was the camera operator's assistant) ended up spilling popcorn all over himself.

Grave Digger #7 (Tampa 1993)[]

In Tampa of 1993 while racing Carolina Crusher, the truck landed awkwardly & when Dennis turned the truck, the rear end was completely separated. This can be seen in Grave Digger: Domination (1997) Part 1 on Youtube.

Grave Digger #7 (Philadelphia 2004)[]

During an event at the Philadelphia Spectrum in 2004, Grave Digger #7 got stuck on its rear tires. During freestyle, Rod Schmidt performed a sky wheelie over a van stack and as he continued his wheelie the truck shut off and became stuck in a wheelie position on top of the van stack itself. The show ended with the track crew pulling the truck down with a loader. Schmidt would finish in second.

Grave Digger #10[]

In 1999 at a Monster Truck event in Hagerstown, Maryland, Grave Digger 10 was involved in an accident during the racing portion of the competition. The truck lost control, and had a violent wreck, which broke a wheel off, and threw shrapnel and debris into the crowd. This resulted in four people, two adults and two children, being injured from the accident, none of them severe, but all of them requiring to be brought to a hospital.

Grave Digger #11[]

In 1998, a 28 year old woman's arm was crushed after the Grave Digger 11 truck flipped over on a beach side in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A driver at the event claimed that he saw a wave of water wash up on the shoreline, which is what turned the truck over, although no other witnesses saw this. There were 13 riders in total on the truck at the time of the incident and a total of seven were injured. The other six were treated and later released. A lawsuit was filed, but it was ultimately dismissed, as the driver was not found to be at fault. The legal fees, insurance and medical fees from this incident however left Dennis Anderson with incredible debt, and is ultimately what made him sell Grave Digger to SRO/FELD.

Grave Digger #14 (New Orleans 2003)[]

In 2003 at New Orleans, during freestyle, Dennis Anderson was involved in a very odd incident in which he gassed the truck at a ramp, which launched it into the air. He landed on the front tires, which pushed the truck into an odd Pogo, where it keeled over, and slammed against a barrier, roof first. The dumpster pushed the rollcage down onto Dennis' head and shoulder. He would continue to drive until he broke his arm a few weeks later in a car accident. Because of these injuries, Dennis would have to miss out for the rest of 2003 season, including World Finals 4.

Grave Digger #14 (Monster Jam World Finals IV)[]

In 2003, at the Monster Jam World Finals 4 practice sessions, Pablo Huffaker drove Grave Digger 14 as a fill in for Dennis Anderson after he was injured as stated above. However, Pablo wasn't the same height as Dennis, and had trouble steering the truck. As a result, the truck crashed through Thunder Alley, and into a tree. After the incident, Pablo used his regular truck, Grave Digger #16 for the rest of the show. He would still use #14 for the Encore.

Grave Digger #19[]

In 2004 at New Orleans during freestyle, one of the tires caught fire. At the end of his freestyle Dennis Anderson launched into a high speed cyclone, half-way through the left rear wheel came completely off the truck. It then went off the track where the grease on the inside of the wheel assembly burst into flames from the heat and sparks generated. The tire came to rest with the fire on the underside, extinguishing the fire.

Grave Digger #20 (Pontiac 2006)[]

In 2006, during the last Pontiac Silverdome show in Pontiac, Michigan, Grave Digger 20 was involved in a wild wreck during a race against Iron Outlaw. The truck lost control of its rear steering on the last jump, and it caused Grave Digger to swerve, and tip over. The truck proceeded to a cart wheel, nearly hitting Iron Outlaw, before it launched itself into a dumpster, and tipping back onto all four wheels, taking the dumpster with it. The truck was fine, as was Dennis, and both made a comeback for freestyle.

Grave Digger #20 (Minneapolis 2006 (December))[]

During qualifying at Minneapolis in 2006, Grave Digger 20 was doing his qualifying run when Dennis came crooked on the cars and ended up landing in a bad spot when the right side of his truck clipped the edge of one of the mini ramps used for quads. It jerked the steering wheel very violently and ended up breaking Anderson's left shoulder. The truck did not finish its qualifying run as Anderson came to a stop where he was assisted out by officials at the track and had his left arm in a sling and walked off the track to be taken to a nearby medical facility. The truck did not race, but did freestyle under Chad Tingler. Dennis would miss 3 and a half months due to the injury. To make matters worse, this was Grave Digger's 25th Anniversary season for 2007. Dennis' son Adam Anderson, who was driving Taz, took over from the first show in Houston up to Charlottesville while Lee O'Donnell drove Taz for Adam before Dennis came back just in time for World Finals VIII.

In 2007, at Virginia Motor Speedway. Grave Digger 20 would get sent sideways after hitting the racing ramp, which caused the truck to slam into a light-pole, and violently flip, before landing back on all four wheels. The driver was uninjured. Footage of the crash can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGFfxDKLdb4

Grave Digger #20 (Jacksonville 2013)[]

During a muddy show at Jacksonville 2013, Grave Digger would be out to freestyle where they would win. During said run, however, at the last hit, upon landing, the truck would break both rear tires as well as almost the whole rear suspension.

Grave Digger #23[]

During a 2017 More Monster Jam event, Tyler Menninga's Grave Digger 23 partially landed on a arena wall. During freestyle at one of the post World Finals events in Manchester, NH, Menninga hit a set of cars full throttle and leapt up onto the arena pad. After landing on the pad the truck launched of the backside of the big air ramp and took a bad bounce, which caused the rear of the truck to rebound into the air. Menninga locked the brakes which caused the truck to pivot on the front end and coming smashing down of the dasher boards (hockey boards) at the end of the arena. The impact crushed a few boards, but it only took a few minutes to clean up the mess and continue the show.

Grave Digger 30th Anniversary encore[]

During the encore at the Monster Jam World Finals 13, Son-uva Digger driver Ryan Anderson was injured in the final stunt, where four Grave Digger trucks performed a simultaneous backflip off a railcar. Ryan Anderson's truck did not complete the flip, and landed on the roll cage, the impact which, was enough to break Ryan's back. Ambulances were called, and Ryan was escorted from the track. He eventually made a full recovery, however, would have to take time away from driving.

Grave Digger #28[]

At an arena show in Richmond, VA in 2015, Pablo Huffaker would back up and send the truck off the arena pod in freestyle, getting amazing airtime for an arena show. The result, however, would result in both right side wheels breaking off upon landing.

Grave Digger #30 (World Finals XV)[]

At Monster Jam World Finals XV in 2014, after Todd LeDuc's famous leap off the first ramp which took the freestyle lead, Dennis Anderson would attempt the same jump off the same ramp to start off his run like LeDuc did. However, despite getting almost the same air as LeDuc did, the truck would land more downwards than LeDuc did, causing the truck to crash land on the nose of the truck and destroy the entire front end of the suspension.

Grave Digger #30 (Tampa 2017)[]

In the first stop of Dennis' Stadium Tour in Tampa, Florida, he would suffer a career-ending injury after a failed backflip attempt. The cage crushed in, giving Dennis head injuries. He was taken to a hospital. Carl Van Horn and Jon Zimmer filled in for the rest of his tour. On September 18, 2017, Dennis announced his full retirement from Monster Jam, stating he would still be behind the scenes at events and in the pits.

Grave Digger #30 / Lucas Oil Crusader[]

During the racing portion of the 2014 MetLife Stadium event there was some controversy surrounding Dennis Anderson. After being defeated by Linsey Weenk and Lucas Oil Crusader in the semi-final round, Dennis went to drive up onto one of Crusader's front tires. During this, Dennis inadvertently hit the throttle too hard causing Grave Diggers tire to fold up Crusaders hood. Weenk was not upset and said it gave him better vision for the finals after the hood was removed.

Grave Digger #35[]

During freestyle in Minneapolis 2018; Show #2, a brake rotor came loose on Grave Digger 35. The bent, glowing hot rotor flew a good 20 feet and landed in a nearby crush car catching it on fire. Officials quickly extinguished the fire and no one was injured. Footage of this portion of the freestyle was cut from FELD footage, but can be seen on multiple recordings from the audience.

The brake rotor can be seen flying out of the rear axle and up towards the top left corner of the screen.

Grave Digger #36[]

After Brandon Vinson's 2 wheel skills run in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Grave Digger 36 rolled on to its lid by a jump. When the truck was flipped back on all tires, the truck rolled over again, sending laughs across the Resch Center. Thankfully, the truck would be fixed and would return just in time for donuts and freestyle.

Grave Digger #37[]

At Monster Jam World Finals XXI, during round 2 of racing, Weston Anderson would race the truck's main rival, Tom Meents in Max-D on the league's debut of the over-under racing track. It was a muddy and slick track due to rain that had fallen before the show, causing it to be delayed. While making the second turn the truck would almost spin out, but would recover. Because of so, however, the truck was not lined up for the over-jump, causing Weston to almost completely miss the ramp, only getting the left tires onto it. The truck would almost slide off into the wall, but was stopped in time to only make a small impact.

Grave Digger #38[]

During freestyle at Brazil 2019, Charlie Pauken in Grave Digger suffered a bad bounce after performing a power wheelie after hitting a ramp. The truck, while performing the wheelie, struck another ramp, causing it to nose dive. The momentum of the nose dive carried the truck across the track, where it somersaulted, before flipping onto the protective dumpsters at the end of the track.

Goldberg[]

During Monster Jam World Finals 2 racing, Goldberg hit a yellow Turning Pole, which launched into the air, and struck a water pipe, causing water to leak all over the right-side racing lane. While racing initially continued with the water leakage as normal, officials eventually agreed to alter the racing circuit. The trucks would instead start inside the stadium corridor, rather than outside like they usually did. This in turn caused some confusion involving Brian Barthel, driving Wolverine, who initially didn't see the flag waver signal the start of the race, as the starting lights were outside the stadium therefore could not be used. The race was eventually re-ran.

Grave Digger the Legend[]

At a 2014 Monster Jam show in Tampa, Florida, Grave Digger the Legend set a motorhome on fire. During Adam Anderson's freestyle with the truck, he crushed the RV parked at the corner of the track. As his trucks rear wheels ran over the obstacle, the motorhome burst into huge flames. The fire only lasted for a few seconds before extinguishing itself. Grave Digger the Legend and Adam both were unharmed by the incident and actually won the freestyle portion of the event. The moment became really popular within the 2014 season.

Gunslinger/Brutus[]

During a race at New Orleans in 2005, Brutus suffered a broken axle during the start of the race and started to wheelie and lost control of steering as the two trucks went over the main table top. Gunslinger was clipped by Brutus, and flipped over. Neither drivers were injured, but Gunslinger could not return for freestyle, resulting in a very angry Scott Hartsock, although he did understand how it happened and didn't put it against Chris Bergeron. Also, although not his fault, Chris also expressed in an interview during the show that he felt some guilt for what happened.

In 1990, Hot Stuff was involved in a near fatal accident. Driver Todd Blaiser crashed Hot Stuff, upon impact, the roof caved in and when the medics arrived Todd had no pulse, but was eventually resuscitated. Todd thankfully survived the crash. Notably, during the event when the crash happened, he was mistakenly pronounced dead at first, before he eventually ended up recovering.

Jailbreak[]

Jailbreak was involved in an unusual accident in 2006 when the truck broke a water pipe inside the Savannah Civic Center in Savannah, Georgia. The show the incident took place at had a concrete floor without any dirt at all. During a race, the truck jumped the cars, then came down hard after the car pile and struck the floor with enough force to break a water pipe that was underneath the surface of the track. Nobody was injured as the driver got out of the truck very quickly, but the show was delayed for about an hour to make repairs to the broken floor.

Jester[]

In St. Louis 2017, Jester was involved in a strange race against Monster Energy, where the truck rolled over two times. The first time, Jester was leading against Monster Energy, but he took the turn too tightly, clipping a car, and pulling the truck over on the front left wheel, saving it perfectly. Positioned towards the finish ramp, the truck gassed at it, and clipped the side of the ramp, immediately flipping the truck sideways, where it broke a wheel off, and destroyed the body. Surprisingly, Jester returned for freestyle.

Just Get Er' Done 2 (Get Er Done Second Generation)[]

2020[]

During the Sunday donut competition for the Hampton 2020 Monster Jam Arena Series Just Get Er Done 2 suffered an unusual incident. Just Get Er Done started its attempt with out the fuel cap in place, as fuel spilled from the truck it was promptly shut off via the R.I.I and the truck slowly rolled onto its side. Several more gallons of fuel spilled before the truck was up-righted.

King Krunch and Gunslinger[]

King Krunch was involved in a strange incident that nearly led to a collision, or an impact in the wall, in 1998. During a race against Gunslinger, on the final jump, King Krunch had a steering failure, and a throttle stick. The truck rocketed just behind Gunslinger, and the engine was shut off by the Remote Ignition Interrupter, causing the truck to spin out before it could make contact with the wall or collide into Gunslinger.

King Kong[]

King Kong was racing against Carolina Crusher at a speedway in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The trucks raced across the crush cars where King Kong, the victor of the race, jumped a concrete barrier, took down a "76" gasoline sign, overturned, and landed upside down between two police cars. Thankfully, nobody was in the police cars and the driver escaped from the truck within 10 seconds and was uninjured. The police cars, however, were completely totaled, and were reportedly brand new police cars as well.

2012[]

At East Rutherford 2012, Linsey Weenk in Lucas Oil Crusader had already completed his freestyle run when he decided to go to the backflip ramp for the second time. Weenk hit the ramp faster than the first one, where the truck did a really high backflip at about 20-25 feet in the air. The truck did a complete rotation where the truck would almost flat land hard enough to where it completely snapped both rear spindles at the same time where his run would end.

2017[]

In Arlington Texas 2017, Lucas Oil Crusader almost caused a repeat of the Captain's Curse World Finals 10 crash, when the truck experienced a major crash while qualifying alongside Gas Monkey Garage. On the final jump, the truck swerved into the dumpsters and violently wrecked, while completely tumbling across one of the dumpsters. The truck would have very likely landed in the stands if it weren't for the dumpsters placed on the sides of the stadium, especially given the low wall height at AT&T stadium. The truck came to rest on all fours near the backflip ramp. Amazingly enough, Linsey Weenk made the top 8 fastest times and made it to the final round, where he faced off against Gas Monkey Garage once again. Weenk won the race with no problems, but Gas Monkey rolled as they crossed the final jump.

Madusa[]

Madusa and Bounty Hunter[]

At the Monster Jam World Finals 5, Madusa was involved in a strange incident with Bounty Hunter. Earlier in the show during Bounty Hunter's freestyle run, Bounty Hunter sky wheelied up a large obstacle, planting It in the obstacle. The truck was left to conserve time. Many runs later, Madusa came out for her run, where she had a mostly slow run before squaring up at the opposite side of the obstacle. Madusa drove the truck up the back of the obstacle, striking Bounty Hunter. Bounty Hunter was launched off the obstacle, where it landed on its roof, bending and damaging the chassis. Madusa however, balanced at the very top for a moment, before tipping backwards, clipping the obstacle, and landing back on its tires. The truck drove forward for a moment, but was then shut down, ending her run. Madusa was one of the 3 freestyle champions of the event for this run.

Madusa and Ice Cream Man[]

In Atlanta in 2013, Madusa collided with a parked Ice Cream Man. After Ice Cream Man had a short freestyle run in which the left rear wheel broke off, the truck was placed on the edge of the dirt for the remainder of the competition. A few competitors later Madusa came out and performed a wheelie off the biggest obstacle on the floor. Unfortunately she hit the obstacle partially sideways, and as she rode the wheelie the truck went off the course and straight into Ice Cream Man. Ice Cream Man had severe damage to its right side and Madusa had damage to the front end.

Major Obsession[]

Major Obsession is famous for its accident in Tacoma, where the throttle stuck during racing and hit a cement barrier placed about 5 feet from wall, which launched it up the stadium wall.

Maximum Destruction and Backdraft[]

It was Kreg Christensen's first ever time driving Maximum Destruction in Atlanta 2009. During racing, Christensen was facing against Scott Hartsock in Gunslinger in the Semi-Finals. The truck had motor issues during racing but Christensen raced hard against Hartsock. Coming into the final turn, Christensen's truck flipped over, barrel rolled, and landed on all four wheels on top of Jeremy Slifko's Backdraft and also clipped Jeremy's father Andy Slifko's Eradicator. Christensen attempted to drive back to his pit stall but the motor died on him and ended up missing freestyle. For the Slifko's, Andy was able to freestyle with the truck at 100% while Jeremy, whose in his first ever stadium event, was able to freestyle but without the hood.

Max-D and Lucas Oil Crusader[]

During a Fox Sports 1 Championship Series event in Indianapolis 2016, Tom Meents in Max-D was the last truck out to go. The truck was already broken where Meents had only front wheel drive to work with. Meents was halfway through bonus time and made what would be his last jump over the racing lane when the truck took a bad rebound and started to bicycle on the right side. Meents was hammering the throttle trying to save it when Meents collided hard with Lucas Oil Crusader, who was sitting there after its freestyle run with the right rear wheel broke, where Meents almost ramped over the truck. The collision sent Meents to another direction and the truck tipped over to the left side on the sidewalls where Meents miraculously saved it from going over and it ended his run there. Meents got out ok and uninjured and actually finished in 2nd two points behind Damon Bradshaw in Monster Energy in freestyle with a 40. The collision can be found here.

Max-D[]

2006[]

Indy06shot6

Maximum Destruction lapping T-Maxx in the finals at Indianapolis.

In Indianapolis, Tom Meents in Maximum Destruction was taking on Carl Van Horn in T-Maxx in the finals. Carl almost rolled T-Maxx over in the first turn, but managed to save it. Tom, who had made his way round the first turn, approached the second turn and ended up driving around T-Maxx, essentially lapping him. Tom headed over the second set of cars as Carl recovered. Carl essentially began trailing behind Tom around the course, who unsurprisingly took the win.

2007 (Atlanta)[]

At Atlanta 2007, Tom Meents was racing against Allen Pezo in Prowler and Meents beat Pezo, but on the last jump, Meents' truck took a bad bounce where the truck barrel rolled and landed onto a dumpster at the end of the track. The truck was unable to advance to the next round because of that.

2007 (Las Vegas)[]

During Monster Jam World Finals VIII in 2007, Tom Meents was in the middle of his freestyle run as he was the last one out when his left front shock broke and shot through the hood of the truck after he jumped the tanker truck obstacle. Tom then decided to turn and head towards the big ramp in the middle. Meents went full throttle and got some monster air as high about 40 feet before the truck landed and the hood flew off and completely broke the left front shock. But the landing also somehow broke the entire rear end differential in half right in the middle of the axle housing. Tom kept on going and went to go over the other side of the middle ramp where pieces of the rear, such as the drive shaft began to fall out of the truck and the truck would shut off with only 25 seconds left of his run. Meents came 6 points short of beating Pablo Huffaker to win the freestyle championship as Meents scored a 28 and finished 6th.

The crash can be seen from 2:00-2:03.

During the January 2008 Houston show, during intros, Max-D lost control, went onto its left wheels and saved it with the right front crushing Q-Torque Iron Outlaw's hood. Both trucks would win an event that night, Iron Outlaw racing and Max-D tying Grave Digger for the freestyle win.

2008 (New Orleans)[]

During Monster Jam's first show at New Orleans since 2005, Neil Elliott destroyed his Maximum Destruction truck so bad, he won the Crash Madness of the Year for 2008. During his freestyle run, the truck broke a shock in the left front but Neil kept going. He then decided to make a jump over the van stack but the truck hit it at an awkward angle which sent the truck upside down and almost floating in the air before landing roof first and coming back on all fours. The landing broke the truck even more but Neil kept going, making one more jump and doing a couple of donuts while parts and pieces of the truck started flying off the truck and onto the track before the truck stopped. Neil ended up shedding the entire body off, breaking all the shock towers, and even broke the cradle in two or even in four in some spots, all totaling to $20,000 worth of damage. The entire Freestyle run is posted on YouTube by Monster Jam as apart of the "Top 10 Max-D Moments" to celebrate Max-D's 10th anniversary at the time. The crash is ranked #3 of Top 10 Max-D Moments.

2009 (Anaheim)[]

At Anaheim 2009, Tom Meents was early into his freestyle run when he made a jump over the racing lane. The truck took a bad rebound and the truck bicycled on two wheels, went over the van stack, and barrel rolled and landed on a dumpster next to where the home dugout would be. Meents was still upright with the left side tires on the dumpster with the truck shut off. Meents got his truck refired and amazingly drove off the dumpster without damage and continued his freestyle where he crashed with 15 seconds left in regulation and scoring a 28 that placed him 3rd in freestyle.

2009 (Indianapolis)[]

In 2009, in Indianapolis, Tom Meents in Maximum Destruction squared off against John Seasock in Batman in the finals. A new rule had been added that year, however, stating that the final race of every show would not have 3 hits on the cars as usual, but instead have 5 hits. Tom Meents ended up finishing the first 4 hits before John Seasock, however, he had forgotten the added lap, and began celebrating by doing Donuts and jumping obstacles. John took the opportunity, and finished the 5th hit on the cars and ended up winning racing. Tom only found out after the race had concluded that he had actually lost the race, and began to drive off the course, embarrassed, only for his engine to catch fire and stall the truck.

2009 (Arnhem)[]

During one of the 2009 Arnhem shows, Maximum Destruction would jump over the double, but then roll over and save it on a parked and damaged Backwards Bob. He would win freestyle that night. The video can be found here.

2011[]

In Arlington 2011, Tom Meents in Maximum Destruction was freestyling & hit a jump sideways which caused the truck to nose dive into the ground, which caused a short explosion and completely separated the front axle. The truck would get stuck straight up & down & Tom would win freestyle that night. Tom lived up to the truck's name that night.

2012[]

In 2012 during a show in Minneapolis, Tom Meents was driving Max-D during freestyle, when the truck suddenly started to tip over onto two wheels and Tom gassed it. When he gassed it, it caused the truck to roll over, in which Tom continued to gas the truck until it rolled over onto the other side. When it finally rolled over back onto its wheels, the truck was too close to the wall and ended up rolling over and landing on the wall protection. This crash is very familiar to the one from Anaheim 2009.

2013[]

In 2013 during a show in West Lebanon, Tom Meents and Max-D: Decade of Destruction set a stack of two crush cars on fire. The show was during the trucks 10th Anniversary, so pyrotechnics were placed in parts of the body. At the start of his freestyle Meents set off the pyro and when the truck hit the cars, some of the sparks landed inside the first car and set the interior on fire. Tom hit the flaming cars several more times. After his freestyle, the track crew attempted to extinguish the fire with fire hoses. After the fire could not be extinguished, the cars were moved and covered in dirt. The cars continued to burn after the conclusion of the show and it is unknown how the fire was extinguished. The fire was mostly likely extinguished by officials or allowed to burn out.

2016[]

In Glendale Arizona, in October of 2016, Jared Eichelberger, driving Max-D, broke off one of the trucks wheels. This was because of a high jump, and hard landing. The wheel rolled off, and hit the Backflip ramp at the end of the track. The wheel however, instead of bouncing off it, rolled up it, and came to a stop, perfectly placed on top of the middle of the ramp.

2017[]

During a freestyle in Indianapolis, on February 11, 2017, Max-D was attempting to pull off a backflip in the middle of its freestyle run. However, the truck hit the ramp at an odd angle, and ended up rotating incorrectly. This sent the truck flying off to the side, where it landed on top of the stadium barriers, which separate the fans from dangerous sections of the stadium. Nobody was injured.

2018[]

In Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field in 2018, Max-D hit the wall in his freestyle performance. The truck hit the wall so hard, that one of the railings on the side of the track was taken out. Some spectators also said that the impact caused the stadium to shake or rumble.

2021[]

In Houston, TX (show 6) Tom Meents (Max-D Fire) attempted a backflip, but during the attempt, corkscrewed and failed to turn back, which caused the truck to flat land on its roof. Tom was not harmed during the incident.

2024[]

In the second event at Indianapolis, IN, Tom Meents went over one of the jumps and got some big air. The truck landed on top of the tabletop ramp in the middle where the truck went nose first into the ground before the front wheels hit one of the ramps on the other side of the track. The truck jumped into the air and began to tilt forwards before the truck landed roof first into the dirt. Meents did not get out of his truck and stayed in there as his truck was towed off of the track and into the tunnel. Meents, in his final season of Monster Jam competition, suffered a dislocated neck and announced he was out for the remainder of the season. Multiple drivers filled-in for Meents for the rest of the season such as Tom's stepson Colton Eichelberger, who filled in for Meents for the 2017 Fox Sports 1 Championship Series and for World Finals XVIII when Meents was injured that season, Blake Granger, and Coty Saucier.

Monster Energy (Escalade version)[]

2014[]

In 2014, during one of the Atlanta shows, Coty Saucier was freestyling Monster Energy for the first time in a stadium when he got stuck on the bus stack, but the right rear wheel dug into the bus, getting it stuck, where it remained for the rest of the event.

Monsterenergyatlanta2014

2015[]

During the last stop of the 2015 Monster Jam Fox Sports 1 Championship Series in Syracuse. Damon Bradshaw was racing against Dustin Brown in Monster Mutt. Bradshaw was behind and went full throttle trying to come back, but in the process, missed the ramp and lost the race. The trucks' left side tires clipped the ramp and sent it onto the right side where the right front wheel dug into the dirt and barrel rolled into the wall protection where it took out one of the firework dispensers and a railing on the stairs before it flipped over. Bradshaw got out okay and uninjured, but the truck was very severely damaged. It broke both four-link bars including the drive shaft, broke both shocks and also suffered some chassis damage. Bradshaw and his crew tried to get it fixed for freestyle, but was unable to make the call. This would cost Damon the opportunity to win the Series Championship as he was tied for the points lead coming into the event and eventually lost the series to Neil Elliott by one point.

Monster Energy (Ford F-150 version)[]

At the San Diego event on February 1, 2020 on Stadium Series Yellow, Coty Saucier was involved in an accident in Monster Energy during freestyle. The truck landed awkwardly off one of the freestyle obstacles, causing the truck to over rotate, and lose control. The truck then crashed into the barriers at the end of the track, roof first. Coty Saucier would come out of the crash unharmed.

Monster Mutt[]

At the end of Whit Tarlton's freestyle run during the Saturday night event at Richmond, VA in 2009, Monster Mutt would make contact with a section of the arena wall, causing said section to be damaged.

Monster Mutt Dalmatian[]

During the Friday night event in Pittsburgh in 2024, Joe Dennis (who was substituting for Jamie Sullivan after she suffered an injury during an earlier show in Newark after failing a miniflip) driving Monster Mutt Dalmatian crashed into the stands, taking out part of a railing in the process while squaring off against Fernando Martinez in El Toro Loco.

Monster Mutt Rottweiler[]

During the freestyle competition at Atlanta, GA in 2014, Rod Schmidt in Monster Mutt Rottweiler would come slightly close to landing the first monster truck frontflip. The truck preformed a wheelie, before the truck would hit the side of the bus stack, making the truck rotate front-ways, almost doing a frontflip, before coming up really short and landing on the rear of the truck and going over.

NAPA[]

During a public, exhibit car crush at a NAPA auto parts store, the NAPA truck crushed a set of cars before heading into a crowd of people, then the truck rolled onto some train tracks. Although there were injuries, this was a non-fatal event, as it was the crowd members who caused the injuries to each other while fleeing from the truck, and not the actual truck. This has been stated by Rick Busca and the local police to the event. The media unfortunately made it seem as if the truck ran many people over. It is also fortunate that no trains came down the tracks the truck landed on, otherwise, the truck would have been severely damaged. The crowd was being defiant with the security for the event, they were repeatedly told to move and either moved back or refused to. Video footage can be found on the Most Daring episode, Wild Behind The Wheel.

Monster-Truck-Accident

Nitro Fish[]

During a race in 2000 at Indianapolis, Nitro Fish took a sudden nose dive after the first ramp, the impact caused driver Steve Macklyn to rupture a disc in his back, the truck coasted to the pit end of the track and medics had to help Macklyn out of the truck and took him to the hospital for testing. He returned to driving a week later, this time with the aid of the "HANS" device. This accident was featured on the monster trucks episode of the history show "Modern Marvels".

Northern Nightmare[]

2014[]

At the 2014 World Finals, Northern Nightmare attempted a reverse backflip. The truck landed on its back, and driver Cam McQueen gassed the truck to save it. By straining the engine, and unknowingly breaking a fuel pump, a huge fire started in Northern Nightmare's cab. Cam was able to escape the truck within seconds, and the truck was extinguished immediately.

Outlaw[]

On February 24th, 2024, during a Monster Truck Wars event in Marion, Ohio, Outlaw (driven by Derick Anson) was backing out of a parking space, while Paul Breaud was walking behind the truck, Paul would accidentally be ran over by the truck's left rear tire, due to the lack of vision Derick had. The event would quickly be ended, and Breaud was airlifted to the hospital. Once he was brought to the hospital, he was immediately put on a ventilator since he couldn't breathe on his own. Paul also had to have a feeding tube because he couldn't feed himself. As of March 20th, 2024, Paul's condition is currently listed as being stable, and making great recovery progress, but is still going through extensive physical, occupational & speech therapy to regain the ability to walk, talk & eat again.

Pastrana 199[]

2008[]

At the Monster Jam World Finals 9, a second Pastrana 199, running the standard black cab design was involved in a roll-over during testing of the construction of the track. The truck was intended to be used as a display piece in the pit party, and was used as a testing truck to test how the consistency of the dirt was, and whether or not the angles of the turns were correct. During testing, the truck ended up high siding, and rolling over. The truck ended up not being used for the pit party due to damage.

Scooby-Doo (American)[]

2013[]

During racing in New Orleans 2013, Nicole Johnson was racing against Scott Hartsock in Gunslinger in round 1. Johnson was nearly even with Hartsock as they were about to head toward the fun boxes, when Johnson clipped the edge of a freestyle jump that she never saw and it sent her flying through the air and crashed violently into the fun box. Johnson was okay and uninjured, but the truck was severely damaged with a lot of cosmetic damage, part of the rear chassis broken and the roll cage suffering so much damage that Johnson had to miss freestyle.

2017[]

In the 2nd Detroit show in 2017, Brianna Mahon driving Scooby-Doo did a backflip, but then bounced on the rear tires before getting the right front stuck in a dumpster. It would remain there for the rest of the show.

Snake Bite[]

Snake Bite was involved in a famous crash in 1991 in Union Grove, Wisconsin, where the truck, being driven by Colt Cobra and racing against Fred Shafer in Bear Foot during round 1, jumped the "hydra barriers" (plastic units filled with water: water could even be seen splashing out during the collision) and crashed into a concessions stand shed in a nearby parking lot. The shed was completely destroyed, but thankfully no people were inside it at the time of the crash, so nobody was injured. On the other hand, a 2,000lbs industrial freezer, which was inside the shed, was destroyed in the crash, left out in full view partially crushed by the front tires from the truck's resting position, where the truck was left throughout the rest of the show.

2023[]

In Hidalgo, Texas in 2023, the left rear wheel came off in racing at show 2.

Spider-Man[]

During a show in Indianapolis 2003, Brandon Harrington was racing against Phil Foster in High Roller. Harrington went into the last turn too deep and fast which caused the truck to tip over to the left side. The truck got onto the sidewalls of the tires and had enough weight on the left side that it snapped the left front wheel off the truck before the truck rolled over near the truck's pit area and came close to hitting Mark Schroeder's Devastator and clipped the right front wheel of Lyle Hancock's Blue Thunder. Harrington got out okay and uninjured but the truck was unable to compete for freestyle.

Stone Crusher[]

At the last Pontiac show in Pontiac, Michigan, in 2006, Gary Wiggins in Stone Crusher was involved in an incident during freestyle. The truck, on its last jump, performed a sky wheelie. The truck over-rotated, and ended up landing directly on the tailgate. Wiggins broke his back on landing, and had to be taken out of the truck via medical help, and was put on a stretcher. He eventually made a full recovery.

Stone Crusher & El Toro Loco[]

During a race at San Antonio on July 6, 2019, Stone Crusher and El Toro Loco collided in mid air during racing. Stone Crusher was forced to the ground with a popped tire, while El Toro Loco was reflected, and landed awkwardly, rolling over in the process. As it turns out, both trucks were at fault, as both trucks ended up drifting out of their lanes and into the center where they collided. Stone Crusher was the winner of the race, but would not be able to return, with El Toro Loco & Mark List moving on to the next round.

Storm Damage[]

2009[]

In a show at Dothan, Al 2009. Storm Damage attempted to hit a van stack, but got caught on it during a freestyle run, causing the truck to flip over along with dragging the van with it.

2010[]

In a encore at a Thompson Speedway event, the original Storm Damage was doing an encore against its soon to be replacement J&B version of said truck. Both trucks lined up to crush two separate RV stacks, however the older storm damage got stuck for at least 4 minutes until a track worker came out with a forklift and freed the truck.

Son-Uva Digger[]

East Rutherford[]

During the 2017 event at MetLife Son-Uva Digger crushed a dumpster. While performing a backflip the truck drifted slightly to the side and the rear end of the truck landed on a dumpster. The truck came down with enough force to completely crush one side of a dumpster that was being used for wall protection.

Houston[]

During a freestyle in Houston during the 2017 season, the truck caught fire after the suspension broke and damaged the fuel system. The fire also set the trucks flag on fire.

Superman[]

At Monster Jam World Finals VIII in 2007, Chad Fortune had his time already run out in his freestyle when he decided to go to the backside of the double bus stack. Chad hit the first part of the stack, did a sky wheelie where the truck bounced down and hit the second part of the stack, where the truck stuck straight up, when the truck began to tilt backwards. The truck rolled backwards on the downward ramp on the second stack fast enough to where the truck got on the front tires and somehow stayed stuck on a 90 degree vertical angle with the nose of the truck in the dirt in between the first and second busses of the double bus stack.

During racing at World Finals 10, Adam Anderson was injured during a crash. After the race started, Adam entered Thunder Alley too sharply and the truck clipped a jersey barrier, flipped across the Alley and slammed into a tree before ending up resting on another barrier. The crash caused Adam to black out and knocked him kooky, but he was uninjured. He was then taken to a hospital for a check over for a possible head injury. Taz was severely damaged and the bark on the tree was split open but it survived. As a result, Adam was unable to defend his freestyle title so Chad Tingler took his place and freestyled the repaired truck, where he slammed the truck into the corner of a bus while trying to clear the triple jump. A Taz hood was placed against the same tree during the Double Down track walk the following year. The tree is no longer there though, as the trees in Thunder Alley were later cut down and replaced by UNLV. A similar accident would occur with Avenger in 2013 and Heavy Hitter in 2014. Adam returned for the awards ceremony the following night, but expressed his disappointment at not being able to try and defend his title. Adam stated the crash was due to his lack of vision through the bodywork after he had gotten used to racing without the body on in practice and qualifying.

Team Hot Wheels Firestorm and Monster Energy (Escalade version)[]

During qualifying at Monster Jam World Finals 18, Team Hot Wheels Firestorm caused Monster Energy to roll. As they crossed the finish line Team Hot Wheels landed half on the landing pad and half off which caused the truck to swerve to the right where it clipped a rear tire of the slow moving Monster Energy (who was heading off the track). The collision upset Monster Energy's rear steer which caused the truck to high side. Driver Todd LeDuc was unable to recover and the truck rolled.

T-Maxxx[]

On August 19th, 2021, T-Maxxx was involved in a hauler accident. While traveling to a show, the brakes on the hauler failed and the rig crashed. Tucker and a second passenger were uninjured, but a third was hurt, but was expected to recover. The hauler was totaled and the truck damaged, but repairable. A GoFundMe was made and the truck was repaired in October 2021.

The Xtermigator[]

2019

During the 2019 Seattle event, The Xtermigator driver JR McNeal was injured during a backflip attempt. After over rotating the backflip, the truck rebounded off the wheelie bar before coming down on the roof. The impact broke McNeal's neck, causing him to sit out for over a year. The truck was replaced by Ice Cream Man for the remainder of its tour stops.

2020

During the Tampa Stadium Series Green event in 2020, Buddy Tompkins was injured during freestyle. A few hits into the run, the truck suffered a hard flat land hit due to suspension issues. Tompkins broke his back and was unable to drive until the late summer.

The Patriot and Vendetta[]

During an event in Red Bluff, California in October 2018, the two trucks collided in mid air, causing Vendetta to crash and roll. The Patriot was unharmed.

The Rod Ryan Show (Kamikaze)[]

During intros in Houston of 2018, Kamikaze (running as The Rod Ryan Show) spun out and hit the wall. It is unknown if there was any damage to the wall itself.

Thrasher Vs. Black Stallion[]

At a Thunder Nationals show in Durham, New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center during racing, Black Stallion broke its forward gear, and was due to race against Thrasher. In order to race, and entertain the audience, Michael Vaters raced the truck over the cars in reverse, while Thrasher ran the race normally. This incident would be the spark that became Vaters trademark reverse move during freestyle runs.

ThunderROARus[]

In Albuquerque in 2024, Colt Stephens in ThunderROArus was doing a race & the hood flew off after crossing the finish line. This was likely a result off the body not being secured after he failed a miniflip at the previous show.

Titan[]

2012[]

At a Monster Jam show in 2012, Titan caught fire during an arena event. The driver, Donald Epidendio, was uninjured.

2014[]

During qualifying at Monster Jam World Finals 15, Titan crashed hard into the wall in the left lane, destroying the chassis. Fortunately, driver Donald Epidendio was not injured in the crash. The chassis was destroyed in the incident, so a new one had to be built. For the World Finals, Donald used a spare Mohawk Warrior chassis as a backup. This crash bares similarity to the infamous crash of Captain's Curse seven years prior (as listed above). The truck had crashed into a dumpster, which likely prevented it from going into the stands like Captain's Curse. The team was able to repair the truck enough for it to continue to run, until the new chassis was completed.

Tyrone The Terrible[]

During one of the 2023 Homestead, FL shows, the truck was in the middle of its freestyle run where a tire would snap off going over the safety barriers and injure several spectators in the progress.

Viper[]

During an AMP tour event in Fayetteville, NC in 2012, Viper nearly wound up in the stands. At the end of his freestyle run Blackburn attempted a donut. The truck clipped a small dirt hill and high sided. Blackburn gassed hard in an attempt to save the truck before slamming the brakes at the edge of the track. The truck crashed into and came to rest in a small area where the event announcer was standing. Luckily, the announcer got out off the way just before the truck crashed. There was also several people next to said area. No one was injured.

War Wizard[]

2006[]

In Pontiac 2006, War Wizard would have a destructive incident during the qualifying portion of the show. Due to the truck swerving on the final jump, War Wizard would jump up, and land on a motocross hill with half of the truck. The impact ended up knocking driver Randy Moore out, and the truck continued driving down the track, until it slammed into the wall protection at the end of the course (RII likely aided in helping stop the truck as well). The truck was unable to compete for freestyle, and serious repairs were required for its next show.

Only about a week later, during the 2006 Atlanta show, War Wizard was totaled. On the first hit in freestyle, the truck landed at such an awkward angle that nearly every shock was ripped off and the chassis was severely damaged. Randy Moore ended up buying the Total Chaos chassis in order to run the rest of the year.

2013[]

In Houston 2013, War Wizard blew and ripped the sidewall out of the tire after landing, most of the tire would be in shreds and ripped despite still being attached on the truck due to the rim.

2018[]

At a show in 2018, War Wizard was performing a freestyle when RJ Turner got huge air off a set of cars. He couldn't throttle the truck down in time and the truck ending snagging a low hanging electrical wire, and ripped it down, causing a giant spark, and shutting down the lights to the track. Nobody was injured by the live wire.

Western Renegade[]

At a Monster Spectacular show in Regina in 2012, Western Renegade got stuck the van, and ended up being pulled off by Red Baron using a chain. This is a regular occurrence at that venue, as venue size restrictions prevent the use of large construction equipment.

Wild Hair[]

In Minneapolis 2005, Wild Hair broke off the wheel during qualifying, while the spindle stayed on, The cause to this incident was because bolts hadn't been properly secured back on after a tire change and it would break loose after the truck landed on the ground while going over a set of racing cars.

Wild Stang[]

Wild Stang is known for a famous crash which occurred in Cayuga Ontario Canada during Labor Day weekend in 1988. The truck did a car crush, doing a wheelie, then came crashing down and flipped forward, leaving driver Barry Packard (NOTE: some sources say it was owner, Cliff Starbird himself driving) trapped underneath the truck. The incident was similar to that of Paula Harbuck's crash in Bear Foot (which is the first recorded monster truck crash), however, while Harbuck was stuck for only a short time, Packard was stuck for an entire 45 minutes before being finally freed. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured in the crash. In the early days of monster truck competition, crashes were seldom and so trucks were not particularly designed with crashes in mind. Also, with today's monster trucks weighing in at 10,000lbs, old school monster trucks were much heavier than that, with some weighing in as heavy as 13,000lbs, 33% or 1/3 heavier than today's standard. This incident could very well be the main driving force to evolve the design of the monster truck to achieve higher standards of safety.

Wrecking Crew[]

2005[]

At the trucks debut show in Indianapolis, Jim Koehler was driving & performed a huge sky wheelie in freestyle which separated the rear axle from the truck.

2013[]

In Atlanta 2013, Steve Koehler rolled Wrecking Crew in the same place twice. The truck rolled in the same spot in the same turn in both qualifying and round one of racing. Even though the truck had heavy damage it came back for freestyle, where it broke again.

2015[]

In Atlanta in 2015, Steve landed hard on the rear end in freestyle, destroying it. Koehler did a big sky wheelie where the truck landed on the right rear and broke almost everything in the rear. Koehler broke both four-link bars, both shocks, and the drive shaft.

Xtreme Diesel[]

Xtreme Diesel, at a event at ERX Motor Park in June 2018, snapped off a wheel during freestyle. Due to the location of the event, the wheel began to bounce off the course, and climbed a hill, where it began bouncing across an active motorway. Thankfully, no cars hit the wheel, as the tire bounced close to cars, and off the other side of the road.

Zombie[]

During freestyle introductions at Monster Jam World Finals 16 the hair on Bari Musawwir's Zombie caught fire. Embers from the sparklers set over Thunder Alley got caught in the hair, igniting it. Bari moved into the staging area where officials quickly extinguished the flames.

Zombie and VP Racing Fuels' The Mad Scientist[]

During freestyle at the 2018 Foxborough Monster Jam, Zombie rolled across VP Racing Fuels' The Mad Scientist. The Mad Scientist was sitting on the edge of the track after an early rollover. A few trucks later, Zombie hit one of the racing lanes off center and the truck twisted to the side. As Zombie rebounded back upright, the rear tires landed on the back of the Mad Scientist. Zombie continued to slide across the body of the Mad Scientist and rolled off the other side. This was also the last hit Colt made during his tenure in Zombie.
