Sting was a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette ProMod monster truck owned by PACE Motorsports and sponsored by World Championship Wrestling. It was based on the wrestler of the same name. It was originally driven by Sky Hartley in 2000, and later Tony Farrell the following year.

History[]

Sting made its debut on February 18, 2000 in Uniondale, New York, with Sky Hartley driving. At the time of its debut, the truck was the fifth and final WCW-sponsored truck to be created for Monster Jam, and featured the first PEI chassis built with a small cage for PACE Motorsports. Hartley and the truck were later invited to compete in Monster Jam World Finals I, where Sting was best remembered for its body flying off during the first hit in freestyle. Following the World Finals, Sting's chassis sported the Goldberg body for at least one event and one display during the spring. During the summer, Sting also ran a special Cheetah body, which was later modified to become Spider-Man (and was supposed to be the cancelled Bret "Hitman" Hart body). By the end of the year, Sky Hartley would leave PACE and return to driving for Bigfoot 4x4.

For the 2001 season, Tony Farrell would take over as the driver of Sting, with the truck receiving a slightly updated paint scheme. The truck competed at its final event at Monster Jam World Finals II, with Farrell performing a wild and destructive freestyle. The truck was also partially famous for an incident at said event where Sting was placed in a corner of the stadium after its freestyle. Ragin Steel would then come out, hit a few obstacles, then proceeded to roll over to Sting, climb the truck, and crush the parked Sting. Two days after the World Finals, World Championship Wrestling would go out of business, resulting in Sting being retired afterwards. The truck would eventually be refurbished and converted into Vette King the following year.

Trivia[]

  • For at least one event during the summer of 2000, Sting was run on the cancelled Bret "Hitman" Hart (PACE) chassis, with the planned Cheetah body style. This Cheetah body was altered the following year, being lengthened slightly, to become the Spider-Man truck.
  • The scorpion design was often misplaced, sometimes facing backwards on a certain side of the body. A particularly bizarre and radical mistake is that both scorpions were placed upside-down on the truck at Monster Jam World Finals 2.
  • In the game Monster Jam: Maximum Destruction, Sting is notably missing the face of the titular wrestler from the top of the truck (most likely due to licensing issues). The same goes for Goldberg.
  • At Monster Jam World Finals II, Sting would use three sets of tires during the weekend. The truck arrived on a set of shaved and rounded Goodyears, displayed and raced with a set of Firestones, and freestyled with a less-shaven, heavier set of Goodyears. It is unknown why these swaps occurred, and one of the only times where a Monster Jam fleet truck ran Firestone tires.
